The Giveaway
By Peggy June
As I waited at the bus stop
I saw the shoes -- nice brown women's pumps held on at the instep with rubber bands.
I looked again -- yes, the rubber bands were necessary since the shoes were two sizes too large.
The tiny woman was probably in her late 70's,
Hose a stylish color, smooth; skirt just above her knees
Nice green knit suit -- if it hadn't had a stain on the front
Brown hat trimmed with black ribbon falling just to her shoulders in the back
Purse, printed umbrella - all just about perfect.
She clattered across the street in front of Lincoln Center like a child in her mother's high heels,
But dignified in her poverty, in her old age.
I was so happy for her - whatever problems she had, she had overcome with her attitude.
New York - what a wonderful town.
